A journey of 966 hours

Since I'm probably going to abandon my save file due to an unfortunate event, I thought I just post the story of it here. Obviously this will end up in a very extreme wall of text - but if you are interested in such stories feel free to continue reading.

1.0. The Preparation

Last year in august I was planning on playing Elona(+) again, since it was around 9 years ago when I played vanilla Elona on its latest stable version. In 2010 I never made it far into the game, I wasn't even close to anywhere to 3 digit stats - but I was able to at least survive basic stuff and advanced very slowly until I stopped playing at some point. What I do not like if you can things permanently mess up which was one of the reasons I decided to play Elona+ instead of Elona this time as it appears Elona+ tries to avoid/reduce such things. I always went out without any pets 9 years ago as I think they pretty immediately died for me - and so I went on another petless journey again. My choice fell on an Eulderna Warmage since at the time I created the character it seemed to be the best choice for me with the extra magic resistance while not having any specific disadvantages. As feats I choosed some resistances and Exorcist to nullify being cursed on dreams as I remember 9 years ago on vanilla Elona this was a significant threat to me (however, now I would not choose this feat anymore since cursing items later in the game can be quite important - I wished this feat would just add a toggle special action like Dupli-Cane and Advanced Casting so you could enabled/disable this at any time).

1.1. The Beginnings

I started the game pretty casually on Essential Mode (I would have preferred a harder mode but I dislike loosing life/mana when the game/system crashes by accident) with the intention not to savescum. I was entering the wilderness around my house to improve my stats until I could survive basic enemies like a kobold. My playstyle mostly reflects of going melee-only and I'm not sure why I choosed a Warmage at this time - possibly I have read before that magic is pretty strong and decided to give it a try later - but I don't fully remember. I was exited about simple stuff like identifying things to permanently unlock their basic selling values to make more money. After around 1-2 hours it was time for looting the Puppy Cave to make more money and progress even further. I tried to improve my gear by getting some resistances and preferring glass gear for more speed. At some point I entered a pretty low danger level dungeon which was at this time pretty high for me. At the end was a level 8 or 9 Grudge which I don't remember anymore if I defeated him or not - but slowly I begun to get stronger. Progressing on this low level went a while while I was also using the Wiki on Fandom all the time to check all the details for the game mechanics out. At some point later I also gave magic a try. Seeing how the damage of a magic dart increased quite fast with its dices and damage value I thought at this time that magic is pretty overpowered and will easily outclass any melee.

1.2. The first accident

After some casual playing I achieved significant progress when I got enough medals to buy some artifacts in Miral and Garok's Workshop. With the I was able to do moderate amounts of damage (around ~200 at this time) and with the I had no issues with upcomming invisible creatures. Ironically I still had both items around the 800+ hours mark, since artifact items are usually pretty strong (especially in this game) even compared to random godly items and over the course of time you usually rarely progress with new random equipment in this game. At the end I was able to blast even level 50000+ monsters away with moderate ease which are all capped with all stats at 2000 - but more to my endgame build and what I all did later in this post. The next step was to progress with the story so I went for the 3 magic stones. When I approached Wynan on his chessboard he crushed 1 or 2 walls which stressed me out (which also happened later on some other locations) since on trying to fix this later it turned out this is not possible - as placing wall tiles with the Wall Creation spell or removing them to fix floor tiles will always result in a default wall/floor tile - making it impossible to create specific ones as I really wanted to preserve all the static areas in the game. I was a bit sad about it and hoped that in the future there would be a way to fix this - like a way to choose which wall/floor tiles to place; a janitor set that allows you to actually also design some static areas at some point; or some other solution. My savefile was now slighly messed up and I just continued - always hoping that I can just fix all messed up floors in the future but also knowing that this is extremely unlikely to happen.

1.3. Careful grinding

Meanwhile I also grinded for more Little Sisters and got more Hero Cheese to improve survivability - which was a slight mistake at this point since I was still in act 1 (as I planned later to add additional body parts). Farming for Little Sisters was quite a serious task too since I wanted to avoid killing a single one to avoid reducing the spawn rate of Big Daddies. As far as I know this is another thing where you can permanently mess your save file up if you make a mistake so initially I did always fully clear a floor before approaching a Big Daddy and then even walling him in with enough distance to avoid him smashing the walls as enemies can still spawn randomly if enough turns pass - eventually an enemy would have appeared otherwise exactly in the turn when the Little Sister spawns just to kill her and mess my save file up (when I was much stronger I did not wall them in anymore and from the ~350 Little Sisters that spawned not a single one died during my whole playtime). When I also progressed more in the story and met Alsapia in Lesimas floor 30 I think I had around 300 hit points but still died on my first try against her. The neverending progression just continued until I was strong enough to finish act 1. But before defeating Zeome I also wanted to finish some side quests which lead to an interetsing experience. Ungaga in the Minotaur's Nest did land a critical hit on me with his first strike, probably with a very high roll and I lost around 700 hit points and died. He never did any damage this close to me again on my future attempt so I guess I was just extremely unlucky here.

1.4. The museum and its difficulties

One thing until this point that bothered me a bit was the museum. I wanted to collect all cards and statues to show them in my museum but anyone who tried to seriously fill a museum probably knows the troubles. There is not enough space to place them all even if you extend the default floor and additional floors can't be created. Also there is no sane way to track which statues/cards you already have in your museum so I decided to just collect the statues/cards from unique NPC's and very later on I even begun to remove some cards as space still became very limited (if you want to make your museum look halfway good and not to fill every single possible tile). At the end this is good enough to reach rank 1 and get all the points to get more platinum coins but I think this is something that could get enhanced. Especially since adding support for multiple floors and linking them to the ranking is not difficult.

2.0. Getting strong

One of my goals was to get new body parts as fast as possible from doctor Gavela as I wanted to avoid loosing more life as neccessary from early farmed Hero Cheese (I think I only lost 1 extra life due to this but it was still a bit annoying). I got 2 additional hands and my setup (either it was a sword and shield or already dual-wielding) changed to quad-wielding with a living weapon (lightsabre), , and . I think at this time I did roughly around 1000 damage per hit - which didn't progress too significantly for me anymore over the course of the next few hundred hours. Also I did experiment with my living weapon a bit and did reset it a few times at Maile - but was a bit annoyed that instead of being a reset for its level/gained attributes instead all attributes that were even before leveling it up got deleted too (e.g. if you get a living weapon with a good invoke and want to reset its level the invoke will be gone forever). At least the attributes from the material kit could have been kept as for example in my case the lightning resistance from being a diamond lightsabre got deleted too - while it was still made of diamond after resetting. Reapplying another material kit (even if the same) fixes this issue but it still feels a bit annoying. One thing that I got curious later on was why all enemies got in some cases just 1 damage no matter what. It turned out that the chain intervalls the weapons do are actually a nerf for cases when enemies can't do something on too many turns of the player (like perma-stunning them and stopping the time too often). Once it reaches 200 all enemies are getting just 1 damage from any source - limiting the combination of dual-wielding and time-stopping (this is also one reason why you want to avoid spreading too much different damage types on weapons as every damage type counts as its own attack and adds 1 to the chain interval - making the enemies just faster resistant to your damage). At the end I went full darkness damage on my living weapon since it seems the most useful - it mostly prevents any physical and magical threats, is very easy to apply to any regular enemy that is not immune to blindness or has innate superb resistance to darkness (even capped out enemies), according to the wiki sticks usually a bit longer than confusion from mind or sound damage (and confusion has the disadvantage that enemies could spawn other enemies if they fail to cast a spell) and does not stunlock the enemy to avoid high chain intervalls.

2.1. Common work

Nothing too spectacular happened from here except casual grinding and when blewing up Palmia for the side-quest I forgot to check for other adventures - and of course pissed some of. I was now curious if they would ever come to my home and trying to burn it but this did never happen. Meanwhile I had a ranch with a fairy to get more Secret Experiences of Kumiromi - which did net me the one and other a few times during my gameplay. If I would have found them as often as Happy Beds dropped for me I would have possibly already nearly capped out all my feats - those beds really dropped like biscuits for me. I also had a shop and did put all the cooked food I got from killed enemies there. I also did sell miracle and godly equipment there that I found but had no use for it. Since I played this game casually and in a more or less RPG-like manner Isca was the shopkeeper. I also intentionally wasted a rod of wishing to give her the negotiation skill as I had not much interest to dig into gene engineering yet. As shop feats I choosed Asthetic Sense to get more money and Proprietary Sales to get even more money. I still assume the latter is responsible for a display bug: Every time the day ends and the summary is shown the first message is partially duplicated with some nonsense. It sorts of depends of the last tiles you have somehow encountered - but I do not know the exact details. It is kind of funny when the message claims Isca has put Palmia into my shop storage^^
Also I had a farm with nothing spectacular in it. Mainly I did put fruit trees in there that I sto... borrowed. I also had a bigger tree farm in my house which I used to produce juice so I had not to go to Noyel anymore every once in a while to farm some snow.

2.2. Making money

My Win-LVL increased while I played more - without knowing what this actually meant. Later on I figured out the number there (in the current version of Elona+ shown as "Proper" in your character sheet) is just the highest level of a dungeon boss you killed. It seems to affect the danger level of newly generated dungeons and quests. Additionaly the highest danger level you entered/cleared or such seems to also affect this (and can be reset at Maile while the first can't). I got into the ranges of level 150-200 dungeons and things begun to get harder. And some point (possibly a bit earlier or maybe even shortly after act 2 - I don't remember exactly when) I noticed all enemies have now a gauge bar. I had around 3000 hit points and a Flash Wyvern could remove half of them when its gauge bar got full. Also the god enemies like Atlas begun to show up. I remember that I killed an early one with several magic darts from the distance but it was still pretty dangerous. However, at this point I got quite some extra money as the gold piles are in the 5 digit ranges here. Later I noticed that it seems to cap at 50000 and even much higher dungeons seem on average to yield even less money. It sort of felt like the money values are sort of overflowing and thus lowering the average a bit until some even more higher danger levels again. If I was wrong or what exactly was going on here is still unknown to me. But with the extra money and the sold cooked food I was able to increase my Investment skill more and more - as it levels pretty fast. It was also my first skill that reached level 2000 and thus requiring me only a bit over 50000 gold to invest 50 more ranks on a shopkeeper. At the end of my gameplay my blackmarket shopkeeper is now rank 66000 - but it feels not better than like rank 5000. Either the improvement is here extremely slow, maybe with diminishing returns or I did already hit the softcap and there is no point in investing here anymore.

2.3. The AP-system

One thing I was already concerned when I was still in act 1 and that influenced my gameplay heavily was the AP mechanic as I think it can sort of mess up your save file too. Currently after 966 hours my AP are 2500 (8500) which is the highest minimum value for my build when you buy only the skills and prepare to swap to any skill without wanting to increase your AP further. If I would have gone for additional speed/life my AP value would now be even higher - while I can achieve those values even without investing the AP. This has the theoretical advantage that I'm as best as possible prepared if updates of Elona+ add stuff to the AP mechanic. Players who instead capped out their AP wouldn't be able to get any more of them and potentially locking out from new stuff and thus messing up their save file. Also the AP system favors to save your Speed Upper potions/Hermes Blood, etc. ideally after you have capped out the related stats with AP which I also disliked. I think a better approach to this part of the AP system would be to not bind the stat increases to the base stats - but instead applying them as an invisible buff. This way it would solve the problems above (but also result in a bit higher stats on endgame builds). It probably sounds stupid to many who read this - but whatever, I just progress without the stat increases and the journey continued.

2.4. Rejected from some gods

Additionally I also went every year to the Truce Ground and temporarily worshipped another god to make them spawn in november and getting the specific training-related artifact. Unfortunately there is a bug that prevented me to do this a few times. Even having more than just enough favor and praying at the Truce Ground resulted in around half of all cases the related god to not appear. I don't know what exactly causes this issue but my guess is that switching to a god too late might have an impact on this issue. Also I remember that I have seen another user here in the past that has claimed about this issue. I guess it is just rare and since the exact conditions are unknown I expect it not to be fixed soon - if at any point at all. My current approach was to not switch to a god later than september and so far my last summoning in november was successfull but I would have to test this further.

2.5. Improving my gear

Via the course of this grinding I also improved my gear. While randomly generated equipment very rarely improved my current equipment and too often even very early artifacts were very superior, all my equipment was hardened to +10 via a blacksmith and to +15 via stardusts. The new improvement was reforging their type and applying a more effective material kit on them. Since I wanted to balance stuff out most of my armor got a Dragon Scale material kit as it has a good improvement to DV and PV while also providing fire and cold resistance which is quite important to avoid item destruction in tricky cases ( I always carry a fireproof and coldproof blanket with me just in case. Too bad filling charges seems to be limited (even accross other items I think) to lower values than you can potentially buy (13 charges in case of blankets). Maybe it would be better if the cap of filling charges would be dependent on your Magic Device level - this would also make this skill a bit more useful. Also: Needs coldproof liquids!).

3.0. Becomming healthy

I finished act 2 at some point and got to a point where I noticed a significant EXP increase from enemies (panic/challenge quests; dungeon bosses; enemies in the Void floor 200+). For example a random spider in the Void floor 200+ gave me around 4 million EXP per kill. Since the EXP cap for levels is 100 million and every level gave me some hit points (in newer versions of Elona+ I now get hit points only every 4 levels - but around 4 times higher than before). My stats slowly crawled up - I think to around 300 - 400 on all main stats, ~100+ on most skills mostly due to travelling except the 2000 in Investment and some hundred levels in Lockpicking since I noticed troubles opening all those chests, safes and treasure balls on higher danger levels. However, the contents never seemed to get any better anymore despite requiring a more and more higher Lockpicking skill. I remember having seen the Skeleton Key once in the log after casting Oracle but unfortunately it was generated in the Void and the floor was already gone for a while. In all those 966 hours sadly I have never seen another generated Skeleton Key anymore (but tons of s - which unfortunately have no effect on Dimension Fishing - while it does even increase the Fishing skill, argh!). Much earlier I planned to keep all my spells up with my chacacter level - but stopped this approach on level 115. My main skills I used at this time (Magic Dart, Cure of Eris or Jua, Speed, Attribution Shield, Feather, Holy Shield, Holy Veil, Vanquish Hex), were around level 200+ - 300+. Too bad some spells do not increase with higher levels (except the spell stock cost reduction up to level 300) while still increasing in mana points. For example my Magic Map spell (on hour 966 with level 623) has never improved in revealing the map more with a single cast. I continued to farm some more levels to get more hit points and to get some more stat increases from some Ether Diseases I currently intentionally had (like hooves and feathers for more speed). My hit points reached values around 15000 - 30000 and my speed got around to a buffed value of 1100+ and my Win-LVL was around 1000.

3.1. A laboratory for all your plushies

From this point nothing too spectacular happened anymore. I slowly advanced in the Void, farmed Little Sisters and also fame in dungeons to make panic/challenge quests more worth, I did party time quests to get Music Tickets as well as hopefully finding a godly Casino Table and Pachisuro Machine. Also I advanced Leold's side quest in killing higher level monsters for even more music tickets and invested them into Hero Cheese for even more hit points. I also slowly killed more and more unique NPC's to get their statues for my museum. At some point I got tired power leveling my spells after I slept enough times so I decided to make my life a bit easier. I designed my dungeon to be a laboratory with cells for different types of enemies. One of the cells contains 2 Meshera Deltas, which do cast Silence on me all the time from their cell while I'm outside and out of their pyhsical reach. That process speeds up spell leveling very much as there are now no spell animations anymore. A bit earlier when I tried to get some Asuras in a cell I noticed later they were all gone. To solve the issue with depsawning monsters I just sandbaged them and only release them when I need them for training (and sandbag them again once I'm done).

3.2. Facing Death's aspirant

After this the progression went pretty fast. Mainly because I actually invested now platinum coins to train offensive skills (mainly Tactics, Dual Wield, Eye of Mind and Long Sword) to get much higher than the ~150+ skill levels they had. I also got additional levels from killing monsters - usually now 12 million - 13 million EXP per kill resulting in more hit points and some Hero Cheese from music tickets for even more hit points again. Around that time I also leveled 5 living weapons to level 10 with applying strength to them so I could temporary buff my strength to 1000+ as I wanted to get 1 of every altar in my home. Slowly my offensive skills evolved and I had around 60000 - 70000 hit points. Around this time I tried to kill Amurdad to get the as I planned to advance some stats later with a farm full of herbs. My first try on killing Amurdad resulted in that I could not get past his Super Regene healing and he drained my stamina up to a point where he could easily kill me. The grinding continued and my stats got higher, up to around 300+ - 400+ in said offensive skills and 150000+ hit points. That was sufficient enough to finally beat Amurdad to get the scissors. Now I have a farm with a Statue of Kumiromi, 72 planted herbs and 8 Kumiromi's Gem Stone of Rejuvenation. At this point Quad-Wielding with time-stopping felt very lacking as I had usually very high chain intervalls, too often now over 200 forcing me to wait a few turns. Since at this point I pretty much studied most of the Wiki on Fandom I wanted to try something else. The idea was 3 living weapons (all lightsabres (I think 1 was reforged) since living weapons at this stage of gameplay are pretty common) while leveling the first 2 lightsabres with nether damage up to level 10 and the last one to darkness damage up to level 10 and a shield for more defense. I also made the 2 lightsabres with nether damage super heavy (250s each) to cap out the critical damage even if the enemies wear heavy equipment. This turned out to be super useful as I did around 10000 - 15000 nether damage on most enemies per hit per sword which also healed me for this amount - around half the amount my Cure of Jua spell heals. A bit later I had also buffed around 1300 PV but the enemies still hit for 15000 - 30000 damage. I advanced my equipment to have a bit higher magic resistance and spellcasters barely were a threat now with the few thousand damage they did. The exception are water spells as they ignore any resistances causing also to do around 15000 - 30000 damage per hit. However, protecting against spellcasters was much more easy than protecting against physical attacks (mainly due to bosses you barely can blind). But I also had not actively trained Evasion yet - I planned this once I have more sandbags for Asuras.

3.3. The Escalation

Then the update happened that brought a cap of 100 to platinum coins and skill/spell points. Since I had accumulated over 3000 skill and spell points I waited for a specific training day and used Advanced Casting and then burned all my points into Swimming and... Wishing! Now with an equipped magaqua (as I never used one before as I wanted to train Swimming over time) and a Swimming skill quite over 1000 I achieved a buffed speed of around 2000 (while still having ~600 base speed). With my Gamma Shift Core I wished earlier for it is even around 2500 speed. My Traveling skill is only around 200 but this together makes me fast enough that it is not too hard capping out skill and spell points in a single ingame day - which is quite tricky since I want to use them only if I'm on a specific day to optimally boost my skills which requires me often to skip some days. At this point I wish I could just use the over 1000 Small Medals I have to just upgrade my "Magic Bag" to fit in more skill and spell points and platinum coins as at this stage of gameplay it is sort of required to play effectively. I got stronger and stronger and the enemies began to cap out their stats slowly at 2000. Every few enemies I have killed achieved the next goal of Leold's side quest and switching continents all the time, going to Leold, teleporting to the Craddle of Chaos, reading a Scroll of Escape and switching continents again was quite annoying. If doctor Gavela could borrow Leold and me just a Mobile Communication Equipment with integrated fax - then Leold could just fax me those Music Tickets every time I advance in the quest!^^
Since capped out enemies were less and less a threat I begun to beat higher dungeon bosses and getting a higher Win-LVL until I noticed bosses won't go here over level 8332. But there seem to be some exceptions. Once a Shade generated as dungeon boss and it was only level 6666 (I think it was not even generated as boss type) and at some point I got unnoticed a Win-LVL of 11110. I guess there is an exception that generates something at level 11110 - maybe it was the Putit Tank I encountered but I don't know. After this point the danger levels incremented about several thousands once I did beat a new higher one. Currently the highest danger levels I see are a bit over 100000. The mechanics in them are also quite interesting: It seems hidden passages (blocked by wall tiles) still scale in this high levels. When I just use 1 skill point to bring my Detection skill from 0% potential to 20% potential I get 20 levels at once (and 0% potential again) with one revealed hidden path. No matter how many more potential I put into (even 400%) I never get more than 20 levels at once - I guess this is the cap how many skill levels in general you can get at once. Luckily revealing a hidden path is still easy with 1000+ Detection on those high danger levels so it is not much of an issue. But my 100+ Disarm Trap skill has basically no effect anymore and so I trigger every trap I step on. Also opening up chests/safes/treasure balls with 1200+ Lock Picking results most in the time that the lock is beyond my skill. Too bad the loot in those containers seems to have already capped out around danger levels of 100+ and they are not more worth later on (but still much more difficult to open). I fear if danger levels have no cap and continue to grow exponentially I will see at some point a crash every time a dungeon with a too high danger level is being generated. Nice side-effects are that the gained fame is based on the danger level and your current fame causing me to get easily over 20000 fame per cleared dungeon (I'm currently around 700000 fame) and the panic/challenge quests cause now to generate monster levels around the danger levels I see resulting in getting over 60 million EXP per kill (I think I'm on the cap of 640000080 EXP).

3.4. An unfortunate event

However, today something bad happened. When I was creating some Cure Crystals on the Pot for Fusion to easily remove single Ether Diseases (since I want to keep some other) I did create 3 * 10 of them. This resulted in 30 Cure Crystals but only 19 Empty Bottles instead of the expected 30. Later I noticed that sadly some items in my house were gone. So I did hit the cap of 400 items and the creation of new items has caused a deletion. I actually thought the cap of 400 items is a soft cap and specific game mechanics can go temporary over them without causing troubles - I guess I was wrong. Too bad that actual item deletion this way is possible - and that the Cure Crystals and Empty Bottles have not been stacked. Initially I planned to stop continuing playing my save file due to this accident and just writing the story of my playthrough somewhere in hope it improves stuff (ideally this would reach out to Ano somehow but I doubt it). But on making a second look it looks like there is a specific pattern to the item deletion. All items that I confirm being gone had a very low base value and the important stuff seems to be still there. I just hope the stack of my current 114 artifact equipments has not been affected as checking and recovering them could be quite some work.

Future plans

Thats pretty much the story. I have a few plans what to do next once I should find the motivation to continue. One thing I noticed is that Yacatect's Banks are not a global storage - they are local on their own. And since it seems you get 10% interest after every 2400 hours the amount of gold would escalate at some point (up to the cap). It seems they are an easy way to get nearly an endless source of money if you setup your own terra-cotta armee with them. I'm also trying to figure out a way to mitigate Brainwashing as this is still a very significant threat. My hope is that enough mind resistance would make you immune against it. Another thing I experiemented with is trying out cursed equipment as an alternative but one piece causes already a huge health loss every few turns. Also I'm curious if enough magic resistance can make you immune to any hex from enemies with 2000+ casting. To test some of this stuff I probably would have to dig more into the artifact fusion system. I think if a randomly found item (like a godly one) has too many and too strong stats it counts more towards the artifact power - making it ironically more difficult to apply the wanted attributes later on it. This might be a reason why Ehekatls passive feat you can obtain might be counter-productive here and possibly needs another toggle. Also if my Casting/Literacy/Memorization skill is high enough I would consider reading some/all of my wishing spell books that I found and kept during the entire playthrough (I found 5 but read (and failed) 1 by accident when I spammed reading on all common books I found) to summon all gods and killing them. I also wanted to figure out if all the ...borrowed Holy Wells could be useful in the future too since it seems they still regenerate their charges. At least they are useful ranking up at the Thieves Guild really fast (with a sell value of over 60000). Werewolves are quite a problem too and I'm not sure if some towns just bugged out. Even killing all werewolves I found and duelling all werewolve detectives caused them to respawn (I have some towns with 2 detectives). I'm unsure how to fix this but my current plan was getting more s from going deeper into the Void (as duelling in Amur-Cage never dropped any more s for me) and then checking every person if they are still a werewolf.

Progress on hour 966

At the end I'm now on level 1121 with ~350000 HP and ~150000 MP. My main stats are around 600+ - 700+ with speed buffed to 2000+. The offensive skills like Tactics, Long Sword, etc. are around 500 - 800 and my current damage multiplier for every of my lightsabres is 71.5. Some stats posted earlier and the order of the story might be slightly inaccurate since this happened all over the course of a year and my memory is not perfect but mostly it should be pretty fine.

Some suggestions

The only thing I could list now would be a few things I would like to get enhanced in this game:

- Obviously the item deletion issue that eventually caused me to delete my save file.
- A way to better fix static areas as mentioned earlier above.
- Other fixes to prevent messing up a save file, partially mentioned above too. Additionally for example if you kill all Old humankinds there seems to be no way to get them later. I'm also unsure where to recruit a if both in Rehmido have been destroyed.
- I/O performance improvements. The overhead seems to be very high and is noticeable especially on a HDD. Examples of issues are frequent opening of menus (like opening gambling chests) and the Appearance selection menu.
- Fixing the broken viewport (that on some resolutions some columns/rows can't be (partially) seen). For me if an enemy is on the top row I can't see him including his important gauge bar - which is quite an issue.
- Better view on enemy bars. If they are behind a wall the gauge bar is not visible anymore which is also a big issue.
- Support for user paths. It would be nice if the configuration file and save files would be saved into the user directory so upgrading the game would be possible in a more uncomplicated way.
- Translations.
- Fixing items not being liftable if your inventory is full even if the exact same item is in your inventory (e.g. you have an unidentified Scroll of Curse in all 3 variants in your inventory (blessed, normal, cursed) but you can't now pickup any other unidentified Scroll of Curse you find on the ground).
- Better stacking support of items. For example catching Stray Cats with Monster Balls of different levels will prevent them being stackable (while the Monster Ball levels apparently play no role anymore). Items from vendors with different selling prices can't be stacked too since the price is determined due to the different base value. In this case it would be better if those items would have the same base value and instead get a (higher) buying multiplier directly from the vendor (even while this would have the disadvatage of lower (the normal ones) selling values of those items). The same material kits you get from Garok can't be stacked too for some reason (even if the color is reverted to the default with a bottle of dye #0). Debris of the same level can't be always stacked too as they generate with different colors (but applying a bottle of dye #0 can workaround this in that case). Also when Monster Balls capped out at level 200 in the past it was easy to stack them for example for catching all the Stray Cats and enemies Arasiel wants. Now it is harder to get Monster Balls of the same level for easy stacking.
- A way to easily reduce stats even more (the might not be good enough anymore if you reach 2000 Traveling). Eventually it might make sense if you could somehow get negative stats too via the artifact fusion system (for example if the Scroll of Gain Attribute is cursed).
- Immediate sprite update once you get brainwashed.
- Stopping spammed idle actions (numpad 5) when you receive damage (like starving). In some other cases the game already stops some spammed actions so it would be more consistent.
- If all windows would behave like Stained Glass Windows requiring you to put them into the wall tile instead. This would allow you to put 3 instead of only 2 items before the window before they turn into a bag and also it would avoid hovering the items up.
- Fixing the bug that item sprites sometimes change temporary if you talk to somebody (e.g. a pile of items from a past quest reward sometimes turns into a bag when you talk to somebody and reverts back when you stop talking to somebody).
- Named fruit trees so they are more easily distinguishable.
- All the other things already mentioned in the story.

There is probably so much more that I don't remember now but those should be the most important things I would like to get fixed/changed. But as sayed somewhere before: I doubt this will happen but at least I gave it a try and posted all my experiences with the game even if this post required quite many hours to create and check (I think around 6+ and now I'm tired, hopefully I did not miss too many gramatical spelling errors and typos).

Edit: Fixed some typos and added headings for easier reading.

New to RVing? I’ve compiled some links and apps

Hello! A lot of these were suggestions from specific posts, so if you search for the link or parent site link, you might find the original post. This list is definitely not comprehensive, they’re just sites and apps that I found useful enough to bookmark or download in the last two months as a newbie in search of information. Good luck and I hope you find something useful out of these!
(This has been cross-posted between rvlife and traveltrailers, so if that applies to you, check to see if people have commented there who have not commented here)

Ultimately, I think there are a lot of people who check these subreddits and forums regularly to either learn from others’ experiences or answer questions. Reddit has been my go-to since we began this journey around two months ago.
I hope others can add to this— these are just the ones I’ve come across that look like we could use them, being a truck and travel trailer combo. Everyone has their favorites, and I’m not here to argue the attributes of any of them, but give your opinion because someone else may have the same variables as you and agree. Please feel free to add to this list or comment on some of them if you’ve found something to be a real gem or a real dud. Thanks!
Edit 8/5/2020: Adding more sites that I missed!
Allstays- https://www.allstays.com and an app ($9.99 for the app, but it comes highly recommended from Keep Your Daydream)
Remodeling/Add-ons- A lot of these use Amazon affiliation links, but I never mind that. The people who take the time to figure out how to do things correctly, like paint over RV wallpaper, deserve whatever dime Amazon (trust me, it’s not a lot) is willing to throw them after I buy something linked from their site. It’s much better than me going through trial and error and spending a bunch of money on things that don’t work. Doesn’t cost me anything to go from their site to Amazon, so even if I don’t buy the product they recommend or if it’s no longer available, I can scroll through similar items and pick something more suitable for our situation/RV. I don’t always know the best keywords to put in for a search, so this gets me halfway there. At least once I see what they’re being called on Amazon, I know better what keywords to use (or even save myself some humiliation out on the road when I can call something by its common name, rather than “Do you have one of those thingamajiggies you hang on the wall so your plates pop out?”). You could call it RV-literacy lessons, I guess.
I like to see how people incorporate work desks into their remodels and especially doing something creative with their monitors. This video does that 13:23 of the video. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xVmxj1CPwjQ
Edit 8/6/2020: I joined Harvest Hosts last night and can’t wait to tell my husband we might be staying at breweries! Also, found this on their site— it’s a very long list of links and I can’t wait to dive in.

10 things in tech you need to know today

  1. YouTube will ban claims that coronavirus vaccines kill. The company has been slow to ban COVID-19 misinformation.
  2. Twitter banned two New York Post articles about Joe Biden's son Hunter. The firm took action to limit the reach of the articles after questions arose about their veracity, and Facebook also choked the article's spread.
  3. Apple's iPhone 12 livestream was kicked off Chinese video platforms. Tencent Video, iQiyi, Bilibili, and Weibo canceled Tuesday's coverage without explanation.
  4. Facebook will ban ads that 'discourage people from getting a vaccine'. The move marks a slightly broader approach to removing anti-vaxx content.
  5. An Amazon worker says the firm reinstated disciplinary action for time spent "off task." Employees risk being reprimanded for taking time out to wash their hands during Prime Day.
  6. Wing cofounder Audrey Gelman apologized to staff for her 'inaction' on racism. Some employees say they experienced racist and anti-LGBTQIA discrimination at the firm.
  7. Zoom will enable users to charge for online events. The new OnZoom platform includes the ability to charge for tickets, as well as a directory of public event listings.
  8. Elon Musk's Boring Co. has applied to create a system of underground tunnels connecting the entire Las Vegas strip. The new routes would connect the Strip's casinos with the airport and stadium.
  9. Early-stage investors and founders missed out on this summer's venture boom. Data from PitchBook and the National Venture Capital Association, analyzed by Business Insider, showed the proportion of first-time fundraising activity compared to total venture capital raised hit a record low of 3.3% during the first three quarters.
  10. The We Company is changing its name back to WeWork. The firm has been grappling with slowed business during the pandemic, with large vacancies in its coworking spaces throughout its many markets.

Origin of All of the Death Grips Album Covers!

I've seen a lot of this stuff pop up before on this sub but I haven't been able to find a post that contains all of this information together. I'm just kind of bored and wanted to highlight the origins/locations/details of all of the album covers used in the band's discography.
As a disclaimer, nearly all of this stuff has been discovered and even posted on this subreddit before, so I'm not taking any credit for most of the stuff here. I would like to give credit where it is due, but given the large number of people and non-redditors that have found the same things, I wouldn't even know where to begin on some of these. I simply dug out as much info as I could find and conglomerated this all into a single post. Also, if I'm incorrect about anything here or if there is anything else that you can add, please comment. That being said, here it is...

Death Grips (EP)
Album Cover
The album cover for Death Grips's original project is actually just a negative image of a distorted looking screenshot from the first few seconds of this music video for Full Moon (Death Classic). Here. It begins with a short video clip of a man speaking while a crow pecks at the dead carcass of what looks to be another crow. Although I've tried looking I cannot find the origins of the video.

Exmilitary
Album Cover
As stated from these posts (1) (2) the cover for the Exmilitary mixtape appears to be a old photograph folded and unfolded into quarters from a book called The Dark Australians by Douglass Baglin and David R. Moore. As u/ebbsey said:
While i feel like i am spoiling the end of a movie...... here goes. The photograph was taken in 1968 at or around what was then know as Oenpelli Mission, today it's called Gunbalanya. The photographer was Douglass Baglin, he published a series of books primarily on Australian heritage throughout the 1970s with a few devoted to Aboriginal themes, his photographs also appeared in other Australian publications used like stock photos. In regards to the identity of the Aboriginal man, Baglin, like many photographers at the time never recorded who he was and simply called him "bearded man at Oenpelli".
The photos: (1) (2)

The Money Store
Album Cover
The Cover is a rendition of a photo taken at the Folsom Street Fair in San Fancisco in 2007 painted by artist Sua Yoo, who is also the girl on the cover of Fashion Week. The entire collection of photos can be found here (Warning: VERY NSFW). According to this Pitchfork article, Death Grips describes the cover as follows: "On the cover you have an androgynous masochist on the leash of a feminist sadist who's smoking. The sadist has carved Death Grips into her bitch's chest. There is an overly confident quality to the woman smoking and a calmness to the androgynous masochist."

No Love Deep Web
Album Cover (NSFW)
As most of you already know, this controversial cover is a photo of Zach Hill's erect penis with the album title written across it in black marker. It was taken in a bathroom at the Chateau Marmont Hotel in Los Angeles, which the band stayed in for an entire two months leading to the leak of the album on their website, which resulted in their dropping from Epic Records. The album cover was met with much controversy, and they were forced to censor the image on their website, YouTube, and SoundCloud, covering the penis with a black bar. On some music platforms, the penis is censored via pixelation instead.
Wikipedia says: In an interview with Spin Magazine, Ride responded to the interest by saying, "If you look at that and all you see is a dick, I don't really have anything to say, pretty much. I looked at it and said, 'This is a great photo, and I'd love for this to be the album cover.'" Hill further explained, "It was difficult to do, honestly, in general, it was very difficult. It's difficult even telling people that's the source of it; it feels sacrificial in a sense. That idea existed long before, by the way. This is going to sound funny to other people, but we saw it as tribal, as spiritual, as primal. Also, it comes from a place of being a band that is perceived as...such an aggressive, male-based, by some, misogynistic-seeming band... It's a display of embracing homosexuality, not that either of us are homosexual. Am I making sense? People are still going to think that it's macho, but that's not the source of where it comes from." In a separate interview with Pitchfork, Hill expounded, "It's also a spiritual thing; it's fearlessness...it represents pushing past everything that makes people slaves without even knowing it."
There is also an alternate cover featuring Ride wearing mismatched dress shoes with white socks that say "SUCK MY DICK."

Government Plates
Album Cover
This is a really simple cover that features what looks to be a slightly tilted 3D model or photo of a California Exempt (for official vehicles exempt from registration fees) license plate that says "DEATH" over a black background. While this is just speculation on my part, California exempt license plates can only have a maximum of six characters, which could possibly be the reason why the license plate says "DEATH" and not "DEATH GRIPS" like some of their other album covers. As u/mutesirens discovered in this post, when viewed on an iPod Classic, the license plate appears completely flat, which is kind of creepy (in a good way).
On Record Store Day 2014, 900 new vinyl copies of Government Plates were released with new artwork showing some of the 3D models from the music videos over the original cover. These records also came with a physical replica of the license plate on the cover.

N***as on the Moon
Album Cover
The cover features a blurry, black and white photo of Ride walking through what is believed to be Sacramento City Cemetery. This Cemetery is located in Ride and Zach's hometown and is right off of Broadway. In the song Up My Sleeves (the first song from this album), Ride mentions a "Broadway Cemetery" multiple times. It also appears to be the same cemetery from Black Google, the I've Seen Footage video, and the infamous moth photo.
Although this is nothing but speculation, and most people believe "Jenny Death" refers to Marilyn Monroe, there is also a grave in this cemetery for a "Baby Jenny," who was an African American infant who died of worms in 1853. One user on imgur used this info to try and pinpoint the exact location where the album cover was taken here. Although this is very cool, the mausoleum (tomb building thing) from the google Earth view looks to be in a different spot than the one from the album cover, as there is a road directly in front of it. Using the cemetery's website, I found a plot map and grave directory to use with Google maps to try and find the spot myself. Unfortunately, it is a massive cemetery that is covered in trees, and there were no street view photos of the areas I was trying to look in. The plot map is also from 1975 and appears to be slightly out of date, and there may have been some renovations or plant growth since 2014 when the album released. I found it impossible to find a location that looked similar to the one taken for the album cover.
I did however, look through photos that tourists had taken and posted online, and found this photo, which shows a mausoleum eerily similar to the one used on the cover, having the same size, shape, door, immediate surroundings, and even similar shadows. According to the grave directory, it should be located at plot 31, which should be well within viewing distance on plot 19, however I still couldn't see anything well from Google maps. Hopefully a fan in Sacramento can one day visit the cemetery and try and find it and post some better photos.

Fashion Week
Album Cover
The chair is located in the Silver Legacy Resort Casino in Reno, Nevada. It sits on the second floor in the hotel lobby and has evidently changed upholstery color since 2015. The girl is Sua Yoo, who also painted the artwork for The Money Store.

Jenny Death
Album Cover
The glass mural of Marilyn Monroe can be found in the Cheetah's Club on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles. Many people speculate that the name "Jenny Death" comes from Monroe's real name: Norma Jeane Mortenson. Jeane = Jenny, Mortenson = Morte = Death. Many elements of the album also revolve around themes of fame and how destructive it can be, which was perfectly illustrated with the later years of the actress's life. Thanks u/Arthurlurk1 for posting the photos.

The Powers That B
Album Cover
The artwork actually made its first appearance in 2012 in some of the music videos for The Money Store. In the Blackjack music video, the outer rim of the circle appears blackened and sits in the center of the screen rotating while videos play on the inside. In the I've Seen Footage video, it appears in full view at one point and shows up again slightly edited out a few more times, something that was pointed out in this post.
It's basically just a blue ground light with some condensation on the inside. Here's someone else's post with a similar one they found. I can't find exactly where this particular light is located, but in the Inanimate Sensation music video, it can be seen from multiple angles next to Zach while he's laying down on a sidewalk next to a tree smoking a cigarette.
The scratching on the light that says "Death Grips" is not real. You can tell because of the way that the scratching goes off onto the pavement on the left and because there's no apparent dip around the edges. It looks nearly identical to the scratching on the bitch's chest from the cover of The Money Store.

Interview 2016
Album Cover
This one's easy. It's just a screen grab of Matthew Hoffman from the Interview 2016 video. You can see it at the 12:10 mark.

Bottomless Pit
Album Cover
The mouth on the cover belongs to Liz Liles Brown, confirmed by her own Instagram post. She is also believed by many to be the voice of "Mexican Girl" from Lord of the Game, but nobody has confirmed nor denied this. It is not confirmed where the cover was taken nor do we know exactly what we're looking at, but Liz did post this photo of herself on Twitter in late 2014, where it looks like she is wearing huge lit-up balloon eye balls where her head is positioned in the middle like on the album cover. Link for both photos. Given Death Grips's history of quietly working with people for years and photographing album covers well before the release date, it could very well be possible that the photo was taken in late 2014. It could also be possible that the Twitter photo was something completely different, and the group instead used large balloons like the ones found at teamLab Planet Tokyo.
A video loop version of the album cover appears on YouTube for each of the tracks on Bottomless Pit, showing Liz rapidly flipping her tongue between the big balloon things while saliva drips down her chin.
There have been a few theories floating around as to what the album cover means, with some saying that it looks like sexual imagery for cunnilingus, which may be supported by the videos on YouTube. The most supported theory is that the balloons are supposed to represent giant eyeballs like the annoying fan in the Inanimate Sensation music video, which sees Ride with giant googly eyes kind of like the Bottomless Pit cover. The photo of Liz in 2014 also definitely looks like giant eyeballs since they have black circles on the balloons. The lyrics for the title track Bottomless Pit mention "Gagballs drooling pools," which could explain the saliva and tongue flipping from the YouTube videos as well.
My guess is that the album is supposed to be about rabid fans personified by a drooling creature, who were given "Bad Ideas" from the band and are falling down a "bottomless pit," making their eyes pop out of their head, eternally getting "fucked in half" by new content from the band.

Steroids (Crouching Tiger Hidden Gabber Megamix)
Album Cover
The dragon mural can be found hanging on the wall at Simon's Bar & Cafe in Sacramento. The glowing red eyes are actually real and weren't edited in.
In the music video. the dragon is shown flashing different colors rapidly
In 2019, the EP was printed on vinyl and shipped with a slightly altered cover that included a white border, the band name, and a parental advisory badge. The vinyl release also included the songs More Than the Fairy and Electronic Drum Solo, using the artwork for the former on the back cover.

Year of the Snitch
Album Cover
If you look closely at the cover, you can figure out that it's a (plastic?) patio table, with someone (probably Zach) sticking their lips and tongue out through the umbrella hole in the center of the table. The mouth was then copied and pasted to other areas of the table at various rotations and sizes, while another shot of the mouth wide open was enlarged and pasted on the table by itself. The hand of the person under the table is gripping the edge of the table for balance on the top left, and you can see part of a patio chair on the top right. You can a closeup of the mouth moving at the 0:33 mark in the Year of the Snitch tracklist video. The location of the patio table is unknown.
The album and accompanying media that was released on YouTube features a lot of themes about snitching (obviously) as well as cults. The one large open mouth may represent a cult leader speaking while the other tongue-out mouths could be followers. Maybe the tongue-out mouths represent members of a group/cult while the large open mouth is snitch talking. Or I may just be interpreting it all wrong.

Let me know if I missed anything!

[Spark of Divinity] Part 30

Check out the new story directory for other stuff on Reddit Serials - there are tons of great fiction here, and you might find something you really like :)
When we left off,.Terra had just worked a deal with Fortune - In exchange for Terra’s aid to several of Fortune’s gods, Fortune agreed to give Toby the resources he needs to build her name, and agreed to facilitate the final conflict between Terra and Gaia. The path is set - but will Terra be ready when the time comes?
I didn’t look back. Alice reached out as we fled, grabbing the hood of my cowl that had fallen down and tugging it back up over my head. I flashed her a quick smile, settling it more surely about my face. I wasn’t about to look around any more than I wanted to look back, but I could see the figures lining the edges of the courtyard surrounding Fortune’s makeshift casino. We weren’t alone. And if Heracles had wisened up to my being very much not dead and gone, other people could too.
The last thing I wanted was Gaia getting the jump on me. Not when I’d gone and put myself into servitude for a chance to turn the tables on her. The bangles around my wrist shifted, jingling softly. I gritted my teeth, bringing my other hand around to clamp down on them.
“It’s good,” Alice said, but her voice was more timid than normal. “It’ll- You’ll be able to find other gods, mistress. Friendly faces.”
“Right,” I muttered, in no mood to be soothed. I’d made my decision, and now we had work to do.
“Perhaps out there, you might find-”
“Are you coming with me?” I said, interrupting her before she could circle back around to how this was something other than me signing away my immediate future to an aspect I barely knew.
She froze like a deer in the headlights. “W-What?”
“I need to see Toby,” I said, glancing around furtively. No one seemed to care all that much about us, and Heracles hadn’t shown up again.
But when I glanced up, risking showing my face if it meant actually getting a proper look at the courtyard around us, I did see a red-haired figure leaning against the far wall of Fortune’s compound. His loose silk jacket drifted merrily in the breeze around him.
The fox that had managed to stay silent all through Fortune’s negotiations chirped once. Happily.
I afforded Inari only the barest of nods, swallowing a sigh and turning back to Alice. “I don’t want to handle this in a dream. So I’m going. Are you coming with?”
“I think your time would be better served by-”
“Didn’t ask what you thought,” I said. Damn it, I was too tired to argue this with her, and my legs ached from the strain of having wooden feet. “I appreciate it, Alice. But if Fortune is actually helping us, I need to make sure he knows. And I need to make sure he makes the most of it.”
“Of course, mistress,” Alice said, pulling her clipboard higher to hide the bottom half of her face. Her eyes glared at me over the top, baleful and dark. “I will, of course, remain at your side. My purpose is to ensure your success.”
Except when it meant going up onto Mount Olympus. I quashed my irritations, nodding at the arbiter instead. “Okay, then. I’m...going to head back.”
“I will follow.”
Nice and simple. Yeah. I closed my eyes, trying to remember what exactly I’d done. Once upon a time, this place had seemed...fake. It’d seemed gaudy, too over-saturated and overblown. Finding reality again had been a simple enough task.
To my horror, I found that the Sleepless Realms were beginning to feel all too familiar. That, I did not like. I licked my lips, sucking in one last gasp of air and then holding my breath.
Toby’s apartment. I could see it. Smell it. Hear the click-clack of his fingers against the keyboard, the tapping of his mouse. I focused on the details, holding his face in my mind.
I wanted to go home.
The ground was moving under me by then, twisting and warping and becoming somehow more intangible than before. I leaned into it, letting the currents of the air pull me under and into the fray.
Alice’s fingers laced around mine, one final contact as I slipped away.
A smell. It hung in my nose, stringent and sharp. Before, his apartment had smelled like trash, bagged up and left to sit in corners. This...wasn’t it. It wasn’t a pleasant smell, but it was not trash. More like...printer paper? Ink?
I opened my eyes.
Well, he’d cleaned up his apartment, at least. The trash was gone - and had been replaced with shelves that sat around the edges of his living room. My old violet sat in the window, gleaming blue-purple in the moonlight shining down through the glass. He’d found a new pot for it - something that looked an awful lot like an owl, beautifully worked into a shape I’d probably have gravitated to on a store shelf. It was exactly my kind of thing, which, of course, Toby would know.
I sighed. Somewhere in the back of my mind, the first whispers chimed in that maybe this whole “Tara got reincarnated as a goddess” business wasn’t the healthiest thing for Toby and his moving on. I stepped closer, my eyes pricked down to watch every footfall. I was stumbling less, sure, but one encounter with a neglected grocery bag would send me crashing to the floor. Not very fitting for a goddess.
And then I came to a stop, reaching a hand out to the desk to steady myself.
Pictures. There were pictures, sketched across notebooks and left in neatly organized stacks. Pictures of me - or rather, pictures of Terra.
“Toby has been busy,” I heard Alice say quietly behind me. My mind was still on those sheets of paper, pamphlets and brochures and handouts.
I heard something else, too - a low, urgent mumbling, growing louder and louder now that I heard it. Before it’d fully registered, I was back to shuffling, staggering toward Toby’s room.
The door creaked open at my touch to reveal him sitting in front of his PC, his head cradled in his hand and his fingers twisting through his hair. Spreadsheets covered the screen, filled with numbers that meant nothing to me. He flipped through them faster than I could follow, murmuring something under his breath all the while.
“Busy?” I said, letting my knuckles hit the door.
Toby jumped, his hands jerking across the desk. The can of pop at his side tumbled, spilling. “Jesus,” he hissed, grabbing at it and thrusting a handful of kleenex onto the mess. He looked back over his shoulder, his eyes widening at the sight of me standing in the doorway. “Tara?”
“Sorry,” I said, wincing. Alice sighed, just a few steps behind me. “Didn’t mean to scare you.”
“Oh. Oh, yeah, I mean…” He fumbled with the sodden pile with one hand, brushing his hair out of his face with the other. “You didn’t scare me.”
I let his lie pass without comment. “Anyway. Sorry. I know I kind of left you hanging here, but-”
“Jesus, what the hell are those?” he said, his eyes going perfectly round.
A groan slipped from my throat. He was staring at my legs - still bristling with tiny buds and blossoms and leaves. “It’s...don’t worry about it.”
“Are those wood?
“Yeah. So-”
“Woah,” he said, reaching out to tap his fingernails against one. “That’s so weird. Cool, but weird. How’d you get them?”
My legs got cut off. Somehow, tossing that in his face seemed...too mean. Maybe I was getting soft in my old age. I reached down, taking Toby gently by the wrist, and pulled him upright.
“They’re new. No, they don’t hurt. And you’re welcome to use them in your...propaganda, if you think it’d help,” I said slowly, holding his gaze. I knew him too well, could read the questions on his lips. “I’m told...it’s kind of like being a dryad. Something like that.”
“Oh, yeah,” Toby said, whirling to scrawl a quick note on a notebook. “Yeah, I can use that.”
Perfect. At least he was happy with it. “So things...are going well?” I said, casting a look around the room. I had to hope it was going well, given the sheer chaos around us.
“Totally. It’s good you stopped by,” Toby said, tossing the heap into a trash can sitting at the end of his desk. He leaned over his keyboard in another instant, typing like mad. “I’ve got- there’s a lot of stuff we’ve got going. I’ve been trying to keep busy. That subreddit’s grown a lot - I figured, the whole meme thing worked well enough, so why not keep going?”
I watched over his shoulder, torn between amusement and horror as Toby started pulling up image after image. “You wanted to go for a survival of the fittest thing, right?” Toby said. “So I’ve started bringing you into stuff.”
The pictures flashed past, little more than colored blurs. Each had a little tagline, a scrap of text attached at the bottom. Pictures of Terra, leering from the dark shadows of an alley with pithy lines about self-defense. I snorted.
“It’s cheesy, I know,” Toby said, beginning to frown. “But, I thought, it’s somewhere to start. They’re common-sense principles - take care of yourself, don’t be a dumbass, overcome bad situations.”
“There are worse tenants for a goddess to stand behind,” Alice said, and to my disbelief, I saw her nodding along.
Again, Toby flinched. “Who’s that?”
“Think of her like my assistant,” I said with a muffled groan. “She’s here to keep me from fucking up too bad.”
“Oh,” Toby said, wincing. “Ouch. Good luck.”
“Fuck you too,” I mumbled, looking down.
“But. Yeah,” Toby said, turning back to the sheets. “Up until now, it’s all been niceties and pretty words, but I don’t think that’s going to be enough. We need something more substantial.” He dropped his hands to his sides, looking up to me with bloodshot eyes. “I can do something like a Church of New Terra, but…” He shook his head. “The only way I can see to get through this without being seen as some kind of cult is if the ‘church’ thing is just...an aside. A tool, a symbol, while we’re doing bigger things.”
“And you had things in mind?” Alice said, creeping closer.
He looked to her, then made a face. “It’s...I’ve got ideas, yeah. Nutrition programs, maybe, but that’s not very exciting. I was thinking I could put together some self-defense classes. I’d like to do a vaccine drive, too. It’d be easy enough to link that back to you, and I think most people wouldn’t be caught up in wondering if we’re up to something if we’re doing good.
“I could see that,” I said slowly. The root cause of this whole mess was still weighing heavily on me - how the hell was I supposed to get the average person to put their belief and faith behind an abstract idea like me being a goddess? In the dark ages, sure, I could probably just pull a trick on them and they’d come flocking, but people nowadays were skeptical. I loved it, but it’d make my life a lot more difficult than it needed to be.
“Yeah. I can work it out with the local hospitals,” he said, returning to his spreadsheets. “People are glad to do stuff like that - but someone’s got to pay for it, Tara.” He looked back over his shoulder, his expression mournful. “I’m trying. I really am. I’m stretching for every inch I’ve got, but I just can’t come up with that kind of money.”
“Just...hold on a second,” I said, raising one finger. He stopped, his brow wrinkling. I smiled thinly. “I...might be able to help with that, now.”
Explaining took a while. It took even longer when he kept running around like a chicken with his head cut off, asking me for clarification and answers and information. I was glad Alice came with me on this jaunt - and that she’d seen fit to join me in the flesh. Or, well, at least not be a ghost. I didn’t have half the answers Toby was looking for, when it came right down to it.
But with her help, we muddled through the most of it. And by the end, Toby’s eyes glittered. His fingers drummed across his desk, rattling the cans sitting alongside his monitors. “So what- You’re saying-”
“We’ve been through this already,” I mumbled, wrinkling my nose. “Look. I don’t know exactly what she meant, and I don’t know exactly how this is going to play out.”
“So I should just go buy a lottery ticket tomorrow, is what you’re saying,” Toby said.
I chuckled. “That probably wouldn’t be a bad idea.”
Alice hadn’t said a word since we’d finished explaining the situation. I couldn’t quite tell if she was comfortable with all of this - hell, I didn’t know if I was comfortable with all of this - but we needed to get our shit done. “We’ll just have to hope that whoever looks back on all of this doesn’t wonder at the fact my religion’s founder just happened to win the jackpot,” I said, keeping my tone light.
“Yeah, that’d be a bit suspicious, wouldn’t it?” Toby grinned, still fixated on the keyboard. “Might ask some questions. Not like they’d figure out about you, though.”
“And you don’t think they’d wonder about the fact you’re here starting some religion based on Terra, after your ex-girlfriend Tara gets smeared across a bridge pier?” I retorted.
Almost immediately, I regretted saying it. His expression twisted, going carefully neutral before the look could sink in. His shoulders drooped, though, and the carefree joy from just a few moments before was gone.
I didn’t want that. The realization sank in faster than I would have thought. I rested my hand against his shoulder, squeezing gently.
I didn’t want to be the person who kept taking away people’s happiness. Not anymore. “Seriously, though,” I said, keeping my words light. “I can’t tell you how much I owe you. For all of this. For helping me.”
“It’s life or death, isn’t it?” Toby said. His voice sounded cheerful too - but the sniff lingering at the end of his words ruined that facade. “I owe you that much, Tara.”
No, he didn’t. “If you get the cash...you think you can handle it?” I said quietly. “I could have Alice help you. She’s good with that sort of thing.”
“Mistress,” Alice hissed, shooting me an irritated look, but I didn’t break eye contact with Toby. The sort of bureaucratic paperwork Toby was nose-deep in seemed right up her alley. Assuming she could come visit Toby without me, but...well, I’d never asked. She’d pretty much always done whatever she wanted, so I wouldn’t put this past her.
“I wouldn’t mind the help,” Toby said, perking up - for real, this time. He looked to Alice with actual interest in his eyes. She shrank a step back, as though she was trying to hide behind my shoulder. And then he returned his stare to me. “Really, though, Tara, I think I’m fine. This stuff…” He nodded toward the screen. “It’s not so bad. It...makes sense, in a lot of ways.” He shrugged. “I kind of like it.”
Again, the worries screamed in the deepest recesses of my thoughts. Toby should be moving on. Finding a new girlfriend, leaving the skeletons in the closet, and letting me stay a memory. I didn’t quite know what to make of everything that was happening, but letting him entrench himself deeper and deeper in my goals didn’t seem...fair.
But he was happy. And this was an important skill too, wasn’t it? Practicing this sort of thing would be valuable for him. Besides, if he wound up walking away with a chunk of change courtesy of my hard labor for Fortune, that’d be a fair trade for his time.
Probably.
In the end, I found myself nodding, smiling back at him. I wasn’t in a position to be picky, and I needed every ounce of passion I could pull out of him. “Cool,” I whispered. “Well. I, uh. I have to go now.”
“You have to go earn a miracle,” Toby said, still smiling.
I groaned. “Something like that. Remember. Fortune. She’ll work with you, so start looking for ways to get your hands on some cash.”
“Right,” Toby said, stiffening.
“You may pray to her, as well,” Alice said, peeking out from around my arm. “If you need to reach her. She will hear.”
“Well, that’s a new trick,” I muttered.
Alice gave me a sidelong look. “It’s not, mistress. You merely never bothered to learn.”
And she hadn’t taught me. The irritation grew, sinking in deeper and deeper. She hadn’t taught me anything, and it was getting old.
More and more, I was starting to feel like I’d been set up. And I didn’t like it.
“Get out of here,” Toby said, breaking through my fugue. I looked up. He stood, one hand on the back of his chair. “You’ve got work to do, right? Go earn me some cash.”
I chuckled, my stony expression softening a fraction. “...Right. Be hearing from you, then. I guess.”
He nodded, but I’d already felt it - the ties binding me to reality, the ones keeping me in this flesh-and-blood shell enough for Toby to see me. They loosened, like they’d heard me speak and understood this was my goodbye. I sucked in a lungful of air, watching the moonlit apartment start to blur around us.
Toby was right. We had a job. If he was working hard, then I couldn’t sit down and rest on his laurels.
Time to earn a miracle.

How to Make a Desktop GUI Application in Python?

How to Make a Desktop GUI Application in Python?
Nowadays Python is one of the most popular programming languages. Specialists value its universality for all types of the tasks. Today, one of the most important qualities is convenience of command execution, but often developers have to write a relatively simple program, the quality criterion of which is an intuitive graphical interface. You have several ways to do this by means of Python. The following development tools are among the most popular:
  • PyQt. The widespread Qt library, which implementations are available in various languages. It’s written in C++ and is cross-platform. This library allows the development of applications that have familiar and ordinary appearance in the general sense of this word.
  • Tkinter. This tool is often referred to as standard for developing GUI applications in Python, appeared back in the early 90s of the twentieth century. Due to the long history and ease of use, Tkinter has a rather extensive and active community. It’s thanks to it you can find a large number of semi-finished products or publications in the network and get an answer to any question at specialized forums.
  • WxPython. Another descendant of C++, namely WxPython, links the wxWidgets cross-platform library with Python. In some ways, Tkinter and WxPython are quite similar, but WxPython is slightly younger and is more advanced approach to creating GUI applications in Python. Also, the entry barriers for the start are quite low due to the rapidly developing and friendly community. Perhaps the installation and the first steps will require a little more effort than the tools described above, but believe me, the result is worth it!
At a certain stage I chose PyQt for my work and in this article would like to show you an example of creating the simplest application for a content manager; so you’ll get to know the GUI for Python, libraries for natural language processing, and several ways of creating *.exe file from *.py for Python 3.6 script.

Step 1. Python GUI: Creating simple application with PyQt and Qt Designer

First you need to understand what software is wanted. The content manager of Casino Now project gives priority to such parameters of content as
  • Word count
  • Number of characters
  • Percentage of stop words
  • Keyword density
  • Presence of keywords in headers
  • List of popular n-grams
  • Text’s uniqueness
If for some reason you haven’t yet installed the PyQt library, the simplest method is to enter this code in the command line
pip3 install PyQt5
All support tools will be installed automatically. When the installation is completed, open Qt Designer and create the necessary form using standard elements.

Figure 1 – General view of the dialog box
The following is the layout of future application. Don’t judge too harshly, this is just an introductory demo to show several possibilities ;)

Figure 2 – Dialog box
Bear in mind the specialized tools to keep the graphical interface user-friendly regardless of workspace’ scaling.

Figure 3 – Example of saving workspace proportions when scaling
In order to turn the interface into a program code for use, you have to save the resulting layout. Thus, the file with MainForm.ui extension is received. To get access in the framework from the project, you need to convert the MainForm.ui file to the *.py extension. To do this, go through the command line to the folder containing the file with *.ui and run the following command
pyuic5 -x MainForm.ui -o MainForm.py

Figure 4 – File conversion
Thus, you get the file of required extension and can run a prototype of the application.

Figure 5 – Plug-ins of the developed application
The full source code has the structure presented at Figure 6. You can find the expanded version on my Github https://github.com/TinaWard. In this article, I’d like to explain the application’s build in more detail.

Figure 6 – Application code

Step 2. How to convert python script in exe

The most popular tools for building an application today are PyInstaller or cx_Freeze. For this article let’s focus on such building method as cx_Freeze. As a matter of fact, it’s analogous to PyInstaller with the only difference that in case of PyInstaller you don’t need to write your own installer script (setup.py), but at the same time, the similar manipulations must be performed via the command line or in the * .spec file. The tool cx_Freeze is set in the standard way:
pip install cx_freeze pip install –user cx_freeze
The first step in creating a full-fledged application is the proper formation of the setup.by file.
The following is the frame of this file. The steps of the setup.by file are intuitive, but let’s look in more detail. First of all, import two entities: the setup function and Executable class. The most informative is the options dictionary (dictionary of dictionaries as it's usually called), which is used to improve the build. It may have such parameters:
  • excludes – list with description of modules not to be included in the assembly. You shouldn’t overuse this parameter, since you can overdo and delete what you really need: nested dependencies.
  • includes – parameter opposite to excludes, that’s the list of signal modules that must be included in the assembly. Also cx_freeze may not find some packages or modules, in particular if they were imported into similar package using the import function. If you have a GUI application, you have to specify the name of the script with the *.py extension, in our case it’s MainForm.py.
  • packages – compulsory packages to be included.
  • zip_include_packages – list of packages to be archived
  • include_files – list of lines or files tuples that need to be added to the assembly, but these are not Python files.
Now let's take a closer look at the Executable class:
  • targetName allows you to specify the name of the *.exe file, by default it matches the name of the launching script.
  • base = ‘Win32GUI’ If you set a parameter as described in the example, it means that the graphical application is processing and the console window will not appear.
  • icon – parameter to set the icon of the application launcher, by default uses pictures with *.ico ext.

# -*- coding: utf-8 -*- from cx_Freeze import setup, Executable import os options = { 'build.exe': { 'icludes': ['MainForm'], 'packages': ['pandas'], 'excludes ': excludes } } os.environ['TCL_LIBRARY'] = r'C:\Users\User3\Anaconda3\tcl\tcl8.6' os.environ['TK_LIBRARY'] = r'C:\Users\User3\Anaconda3\tcl\tk8.6' setup( name = "TextTool", version = "0.0", description = "Here write smth", options = options, executables = [Executable('TextToolS.py', targetName = ‘ThisIsName.exe’)])
To compile you need to run the setup.py file. To do this, enter the following code via the command line from the project directory:
python setup.py build
After that you will see the launch of the project build.

Figure 7 – Running project build
Building a project can take from 10 seconds to several minutes, depending on the size and number of interconnected modules in your application.
Not always the project build runs smoothly, let’s look at some of the most common mistakes. Most of them can be solved by searching and writing in the correct parameters of the setup function in the setup.py file, but often due to laziness or lack of time, the temporary ways are implemented to solve this problem. For example, this one, when you haven’t specified the module’s addition:

Figure 8 – Error example
"Missing required dependencies {0}".format(missing_dependencies)) ImportError: Missing required dependencies ['numpy']
To make this just copy _methods.py file from Anaconda library
…\Anaconda3\Lib\site-packages\numpy\core
to numpy folder ‘core’, located
…\build\exe.win-amd64-3.6\lib\numpy\core.

Figure 9 – First type error fix
The second common mistake is undersampling hidden dependencies. It’s possible that you didn’t see the hidden dependencies of the packages and didn’t add it. Often the problem occurs with packages like idnadata

Figure 10 – Second type error
File "C:\Users\User3\Anaconda3\lib\site-packages\tldextract\__init__.py", line 3, in from .cli import __version__ File "C:\Users\User3\Anaconda3\lib\site-packages\tldextract\cli.py", line 14, in from .tldextract import TLDExtract File "C:\Users\User3\Anaconda3\lib\site-packages\tldextract\tldextract.py", line 62, in import idna File "C:\Users\User3\Anaconda3\lib\site-packages\idna\__init__.py", line 2, in from .core import * File "C:\Users\User3\Anaconda3\lib\site-packages\idna\core.py", line 1, in from . import idnadata ImportError: cannot import name 'idnadata'
The algorithm is the same, you find the missing file in the folders of the installed libraries and copy it in the appropriate folder of your assembly. This’s win-win option if you need a quick compilation for testing.
From …\Anaconda3\Lib\site-packages\idna to …\build\exe.win-amd64-3.6\lib\idna

Figure 11 –Second type error fix
In general, the advantages of cx_Freeze are:
  • Startup files for Linux
  • MSI installers for Windows
  • RPM packages for Linux
  • Software packages for Mac OS X (.app, .dmg)
The disadvantages are:
  • No possibility to pack all python-modules and dll-files in one exe-file
  • No cross compilation

Conclusion

In this article we have looked at the principles of creating a GUI application in Python using PyQt and compiling the created app to *.exe by means of cx_Freeze. I hope you enjoyed this article, if you have any questions, please contact [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]).

How to determine which gyms are eligible from EX Raids: Findings from a worldwide analysis of 1000+ EX Raid locations

Updates as of 2018-01-16

1.0 Background

Last week I posted an analysis of 49 EX raid locations in Western Australia. The key findings were:

There still remained some follow up questions:

To answer those questions I have spent a good chunk of the last week performing a larger analysis of EX raid locations from around the world. The following post describes my key findings.

Note #1: Throughout this article where I refer to ‘parks’, I am generally referring to the entire collection of tags on OSM which lead to nests, including landuse=recreation_ground, leisure=garden, landuse=grass, etc. If I want to refer to leisure=park polygons specifically then I will use that term.

Note #2: This research will only deal with the crietria that allows a non-sponsored gym to be eligible to host EX raids. It does not deal with the selection mechanism (i.e. which gym is chosen each week).

2.0 Methodology

2.1 Data collection

Data was collected about EX raids from locations worldwide. This was sourced through collections previously posted on Reddit, local Discord groups and data sent to me as response to a thread I posted a few days ago (both publically and via PMs). The following table shows the number of gym locations from each country/region. The distribution of gym locations is also shown in the following graphic: https://i.imgur.com/QnL1vPe.png

Region Number of EX Raid Locations
Canada 248
Australia 224
Hong Kong 140
Singapore 134
United States 130
United Kingdom 61
France 52
Brazil 29
Germany 22
Belgium 15
United Arab Emirates 5
Total 1060

The dataset included non-sponsored gyms only. Dates of EX raids ranged from 30 September, 2017 to 25 December, 2017 (encompassing all non-sponsored EX raid dates prior to the latest January wave). 1010 out of the 1060 were for dates ranged from 11 November, 2017 to 25 December, 2017.

2.2 Analysis of parks

Data was exported from OSM using overpass-turbo. A list of the exported tags is available here: http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/vs3. Data was exported from one-month intervals (1 Mar 2016, 1 Apr 2016, 1 May 2016 … 1 Jan 2017). Data was also exported from the date of the latest nest update (22 Jan 2017), the date of the visual map data in the game (13 Aug 2017) and current (1 Jan 2018).

I analysed gyms using each month’s data via a point-in-polygon method using R (see description here). For gyms which failed the point-in-polygon test I checked level 20 s2 cells using osmcoverer by MzRed which was being developed as I was completing my analysis. (At that stage osmcoverer did not have gym marker capability or I would have just used osmcoverer instead of R). For any gyms which showed a difference in the monthly data (e.g. fell inside a park polygon using data from Jul 2016 but did not fall inside a polygon using data from Jun 2016) the data was manually investigated on OSM to check for the specific date resulting in that change.

3.0 Findings

3.1: Changes in EX raid eligibility criteria over time

My previous analysis only included data from December 2017, whereas now I had collected data dating back to 30 September, 2017. After analysing which gyms fell inside or outside parks, it became clear that Niantic changed the way that non-sponsored gyms were chosen for EX Raids between the 20 October EX raid and the 11 November EX raid.

EX Raid Date % Parks % Non-Parks
30 Sep/1 Oct 41% 59%
20 October 27% 73%
11 November 100% 0%
18 November 100% 0%
26 November 100% 0%
3 December 100% 0%
11 December 100% 0%
18 December 100% 0%
25 December 100% 0%

Since the change, 100% of non-sponsored gyms can be explained using OSM tags, without exception. This could also explain why there was a three-week break in non-sponsored raids; during this time Niantic was modifying their selection algorithm to target parks.

Future research will need to pay attention to EX raid release dates, as the difference between pre-November and post-November raids does affect analysis. A number of comments in my previous thread provided examples of EX raids not in parks, however follow ups confirmed that these invites were for raids in SeptembeOctober. Additionally, there is no guarantee that Niantic will not change the formula again.

Implications: Unfortunately, if your town's park areas were not adequately mapped in OSM and you don’t have sponsored gyms then it appears you are out of luck for EX raids. Despite having over 1000 EX raid locations from November and December, not a single instance was found of a non-sponsored EX raid occurring without a corresponding OSM tag.

3.2: Use of level 20 s2 cells to determine if gyms are inside parks

In my previous thread I established the idea that the boundaries of parks are defined by level 20 s2 cells. This was used to account for three gyms in Western Australia which had EX raids despite falling just outside the polygon of the parks on OSM.

I can confirm after looking at the expanded dataset that this was not a coincidence. In total there were 40 gyms (out of 1060) which fit this circumstance: they could only be explained based on s2 cell overlap. A few examples from these 40 gyms are shown below (maps generated using osmcoverer by MzRed).

Gym Latitude Longitude Map of s2 cells
Pavilion of Yew Tee Park 1.397505 103.744281 link
Circle of Pillars 1.345777 103.693723 link
Alumni Field Commemoration 43.473968 -80.525313 link

I am confident enough to say that this confirms that level 20 cells are used to determine whether gyms are in parks.

Implications: Previous tools which have looked solely at whether gyms lay within polygons might have excluded a small proportion of eligible gyms. Based on this dataset, ~4% of gyms would not have been predicted to be EX raid eligible if level 20 s2 cells were not considered.

3.3: Date range for OSM data

Establishing the earliest date of OSM data is straightforward: look for locations that have had EX raids, and then look for when the corresponding OSM feature was created. There are three gyms which were able to place the earliest starting date in July, 2016:

Gym Latitude Longitude Creation date of corresponding tag
Medford Statue of Liberty 42.323083 -122.876866 6 July 2016 (OSM link)
上帝古廟 22.326202 114.185189 9 July 2016 (OSM link)
九龍城立方體地標 22.327121 114.185292 9 July 2016 (OSM link)

Finding the oldest possible date of the data is expected to be more challenging. It requires an EX raid to be held at a place that has had the tag removed, either because the park itself has been removed or because the park was plotted incorrectly and has been corrected. Finding the oldest possible date for the data therefore depends on luck.

Gym Latitude Longitude Removal/modification date of corresponding tag
Towers Baptist Church 49.142106 -123.109827 6 January 2017 (OSM link)
[Golf course gym] [Withheld] [Withheld] 17 November 2016
Jin Fu Gong Temple 1.340732 103.690463 31 August 2016 (OSM link)
南洋公园 1.340382 103.690883 31 August 2016 (OSM link)

LimboMon had already discovered a possible date of August, 2016 for the OSM data based on a Singapore gym which had landuse=greenfield. At the time it was difficult to assert this with confidence for two reasons: firstly, landuse=greenfield was a tag that had not previously been linked to nests; secondly, not enough data had been collected to clearly establish that 100% of EX raids correspond to OSM tags.

Using a separate line of data I have been able to prove that the EX raid data pre-dates the nest data (January 22, 2017). Towers Baptist Church in Canada (49.142106, -123.109827) held an EX raid on 18th December, 2017. Until 6 January 2017 the gym was covered by a leisure=park polygon which covered the church, however after this date a user modified the park polygon to exclude the church building. Compare the level 20 overlay before 6 Jan 2017 and after 6 Jan 2017.

In my last analysis thread, DrKillerZA provided me coordinates of an EX raid in South Africa which was at a golf course. The polygon for the golf course had been modified in November 2016 which removed the gym from the range of the golf course (compare the level 20 overlay before 17 Nov 2016 and after 17 Nov 2016). I was recently able to confirm that the EX raid at this gym occurred on December 18, which means it was subject to the parks requirement for non-sponsored EX raids, and hence the OSM data must be prior to 17th November 2016.

Finally, I can also reconfirm the Singapore data. In addition to Jin Fu Gong Temple (1.340732, 103.690463), which held an EX raid on 11 November 2017, there is now also 南洋公园 (1.340382, 103.690883) which held an EX raid on 11 December, 2017. Both of these gyms were in range of a landuse=greenfield tag that was removed 31 August 2016 when a nursing home was built on the site. There are no other nearby tags which could trigger EX raid status, even when considering level 20 s2 cells.

Based on the above evidence we can conclude that the date range for the OSM data used for EX raids is from somewhere between 9th July 2016 and 31st August 2016. It is likely more towards the July date, given that park additions are more common than park removals and therefore the earliest possible OSM date is easier to locate than the latest possible OSM date.

Implications: OSM received a flurry of attention in Dec 2016-Jan 2017 on Silph Road when the links between OSM and Pokemon Go became increasingly clear. This led to a lot of players checking out OSM and mapping parks in their area to attempt to get nests. Unfortunately, the EX raid data pre-dates this. Players may have been targeting gyms incorrectly believing that they can host EX raids when they actually cannot.

3.4: OSM tags associated with EX Raids

My initial study showed that leisure=park and landuse=recreation_ground were the two most common tags associated with non-sponsored EX raids. I wanted to use the larger dataset to explore which additional tags can be proven to lead to EX raids. For this stage of the analysis, I first removed every EX raid that could be explained using leisure=park or landuse=recreation_ground (including those which were covered by level 20 s2 cells). This accounted for 912/1010 gyms. For the remaining gyms, I manually checked the corresponding way(s) on OSM.

The following table shows the raw number of gyms which SOLELY matched each tag and no other.

OSM tag Matching gyms Example gym
landuse=grass 36 Church of Canada (45.493796, -73.575442) (OSM)
leisure=playground 16 Kam Ying Fountain (22.422243, 114.23617) (OSM)
leisure=garden 15 Confucious Statue (29.721873, -95.387988) (OSM)
leisure=recreation_ground 8 Dancer and the Clock (1.348024, 103.756122) (OSM)
leisure=pitch 8 Don Dawson Oval (-33.904022, 150.933424) (OSM)
landuse=meadow 7 CSI Campus Centre (40.601612, -74.148523) (OSM)
leisure=golf_course 2 Casino Grove Entry (-38.118564, 145.25032) (OSM)

landuse=farmyard 1* Parkgutt/Gutt med sydvest i bronse (59.895986,10.812309) (OSM)
natural=grassland 1* Kukkiva Maisemapelto (61.475845,23.824455) (OSM)
boundary=physiogeographical 0 -
boundary=nature_reserve 0 -
leisure=nature_reserve 0 -
natural=heath 0 -
natural=moor 0 -
landuse=farmland 0 -
landuse=orchard 0 -
landuse=vineyard 0 -

Edit 1: Added landuse=farmyard example mentioned here.
Edit 2: Some people have asked about parks, etc. tagged as relations instead of ways (rel[leisure=park] instead of way[leisure=park]). 100% of the gyms I tested could be explained only using ways. If you find an example of an EX raid gym that requires relations to explain it, let me know.
Edit 3: MzRed provided me two examples of gyms which can only be explained using natural=grassland. I have added this to the table and have modified the overpass-turbo query.

This confirms the ability of 11 tags (including leisure=park and landuse=recreational_ground) to generate EX raids. The lack of results for the last six OSM tags does not mean that they cannot spawn EX raids. These tags may be rare, may not contain gyms, or may not be in well-frequented areas (or possibly all three).

Implications: It appears that most tags that lead to nests can lead to EX raids, however keep in mind that EX raids use older data than current nests so there is not a 1:1 correlation.

4.0 Application of new findings

4.1 Western Australian gyms: A case study

I have a copy of location details for all gyms in Perth, Mandurah and Bunbury, Western Australia. Using these I had previously used the point-in-polygon method using OSM data from 22 January, 2017 to create a map of predicted EX raid gyms. However the latest studies have shown that I would have had some false positives (gyms matched as positive when due to older-than-expected data they should’ve been negative) and some false negatives (gyms outside polygons but inside level 20 s2 cells).

I re-ran the gym prediction tool on my Perth gyms dataset using OSM data from different dates, and with and without accounting for s2 cells, resulting in the following numbers:

OSM source date Gyms using OSM polygon method (incorrect) Gyms using s2 cells method (correct)
22 Jan 2017 956 1082
31 Aug 2016 932 1058
9 Jul 2016 928 1054

Overall there was a net increase in the number of eligible gyms, thanks to the extra gyms which were bordering parks and fell inside level 20 s2 cells. There were 24-28 gyms, however, which do not count due to the OSM data being older than I initially anticipated.

4.2 How to analyse your own map data

For this to work, you will need a:

The csv needs to be structured with three columns: name, latitude and longitude. Do not include a header row. Example:
Clean and Green Plaque,1.340817,103.743898 Lookout Tower at Yishun Pond,1.425504,103.840164 Autobot Evac,1.254207,103.821722 Clock Tower at Tampines Central Park,1.354006,103.936181

If any of the gym names have commas, either remove those or enclose the gym name in quotation marks. Latitudes and longitudes need to be exact given the precision of level 20 s2 cells – use the Ingress Portal or another source to obtain exact latitudes and longitudes.

Go to http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/vs3. Zoom to your town/suburb and click run. This will collect the OSM data. The linked query is backdated to 2016-07-10. Confirmed areas will show up as blue, unconfirmed areas will show up as grey. Export the OSM data; Click “Export” then “Download as GeoJSON”.

Open Command Prompt and navigate to the osmcoverer directory. Use the following command:
osmcoverer -markers=gyms.csv input.geojson

osmcoverer will output a file called “markers_within_features.csv” which will contain a list of all gyms inside level 20 s2 cells of OSM parks, etc. It will also generate a .geojson file which has the park polygons, s2 cells and colour-coded markers. This can be visualised by going to http://geojson.io/ and opening the export file. osmcoverer has more options such as being able to generate a level 12 s2 cell overlay for gyms, so it is worth checking out.
